Flameback Pygmy Angelfish Care Guide

Scientific Name: Centropyge acanthops
Common Names: African Flameback Angel, Orangeback Angel, Fireball Angel
Origin: Western Indian Ocean

Temperament

Semi-aggressive; best kept with other peaceful to moderately bold fish. May nip at corals, especially fleshy LPS or clam mantles.

Reef Compatibility

With Caution – Generally safe with SPS, but individual behavior varies.

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 30–40 gallons

  • Aquascape: Plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temp: 72–78°F

    • pH: 8.1–8.4

    • Salinity: 1.023–1.025

    • dKH: 8–12

Diet

Omnivore – feed a varied diet including:

  • Spirulina and marine algae

  • High-quality angelfish pellets/flakes

  • Frozen foods (mysis, brine, plankton)

  • Occasional sponge-based angel foods

Size

Grows up to ~3" (7.5 cm)

Notes

  • One Flameback per tank unless in a large system (pairs only when introduced as juveniles).

  • Active swimmer with vibrant coloration that intensifies under proper lighting.

  • Known for being hardy once acclimated.
