The Ember Tetra is a tiny, fiery-orange freshwater fish known for its peaceful nature and brilliant color. Perfect for nano and community tanks, it’s hardy, active, and looks stunning in well-planted aquariums.


Basic Description

  • Scientific Name: Hyphessobrycon amandae

  • Common Name: Ember Tetra

  • Appearance:

    • Bright orange to reddish-orange body

    • Translucent fins with light orange tint

    • Males are typically more vibrant and slender

  • Size: Up to 0.8 inches (2 cm)

  • Lifespan: 2–4 years

  • Origin: Araguaia River Basin, Brazil

 

Note: Best kept in mature, cycled aquariums with gentle flow.


Behavior & Social Needs

  • Temperament: Peaceful, social

  • Schooling: Keep in groups of 6 or more — larger groups reduce stress and encourage vibrant color and natural behavior

  • Activity: Mid-to-top swimmers; active but not aggressive


Diet & Feeding

  • Type: Omnivore

  • Preferred Foods:

    • High-quality micro pellets or flakes

    • Live/frozen: baby brine shrimp, daphnia, micro worms

    • Crushed or powdered food for small mouths

  • Feeding Frequency: 1–2 times daily in small amounts



Breeding

  • Difficulty: Moderate

  • Spawning Type: Egg scatterers

  • Conditions:

    • Soft, acidic water (pH ~6.0)

    • Temp around 80°F (26–27°C)

    • Fine-leaved plants or spawning mops

  • Notes:

    • Adults may eat eggs/fry

    • Use a breeding tank if raising fry
