The Electric Blue Balloon Ram (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi) is a unique and eye-catching variant that combines the stunning electric blue coloration with a distinctive balloon-shaped body. These charming dwarf cichlids feature the same intense blue coloration as the Electric Blue Ram but in a compact, rounded body shape that adds to their appeal. While their unusual body shape makes them more delicate than standard rams, their breathtaking appearance and engaging behavior make them highly prized by experienced aquarists.

Temperament

  • Generally peaceful, can be territorial when breeding

  • Best kept in pairs or small groups

Adult Size

  • 1.5–2 inches (shorter but rounder body)

Minimum Tank Size

  • 20 gallons for a pair

  • Temperature: 78–85°F (requires warmer water)

  • pH: 5.0–7.0 (prefers acidic water)

  • Hardness: Very soft to soft (0–8 dGH)

  • Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm (very sensitive)

  • Nitrate: <10 ppm

Diet

  • Carnivorous/omnivorous

  • Feed a varied diet:

    • High-quality small pellets or flakes

    • Frozen or live foods: brine shrimp, bloodworms
