Hemigrammus bleheri – "True" Rummy Nose Tetra: Description & Care Guide

Hemigrammus bleheri is one of the three closely related species commonly sold as Rummy Nose Tetras, and it's considered the "true" Rummy Nose Tetra due to its more vibrant red head and consistent body markings. It's an active, peaceful, and visually striking freshwater fish best kept in schools.

Basic Description

  • Scientific Name: Hemigrammus bleheri

  • Common Names: Rummy Nose Tetra, Firehead Tetra, Brilliant Rummy Nose

  • Appearance:

    • Distinctive deep red nose extending past the eyes (reddest among its genus)

    • Sleek, silver body

    • Bold black-and-white striped “zebra” tail

  • Size: Up to 2 inches (5 cm)

  • Lifespan: 5–6 years (with proper care)

  • Origin: Rio Negro and Rio Meta basins (Brazil and Colombia)

Behavior & Temperament

  • Temperament: Peaceful, shoaling fish

  • Social Needs: Must be kept in groups of 6+, ideally 10+ to thrive

  • Activity: Strong schooling behavior—very synchronized swimming when happy Note: These fish are sensitive to water quality and parameter swings—ideal for mature tanks only.

Diet & Feeding

  • Type: Omnivore

  • Diet Includes:

    • High-quality flake or nano pellets

    • Live or frozen: daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworms

    • Spirulina or veggie-based flakes (occasionally)

  • Feeding Frequency: 1–2 times daily, in small amounts

Care Tips

  • Red Nose = Health Indicator: A dull or faded red nose often indicates:

    • Stress from poor water quality

    • Disease or bullying

    • Inadequate shoal size

  • Filtration: Use a sponge or low-flow filter—strong currents stress them

  • Water Changes: Weekly 25–30% with dechlorinated, soft water

 Breeding (Advanced)

  • Difficult in home aquariums due to sensitivity and specific water needs:

    • Very soft, acidic water (pH ~5.5)

    • Slightly warmer temps (~80°F/27°C)

    • Spawning mops or fine-leaved plants needed

  • Egg-scatterers: Parents will eat the eggs, so use a breeding tank with a mesh separator or remove adults post-spawning
